Connections Puzzle Solving Tips

Better solving comes from slowing down, testing categories, and noticing when a word is bait for the wrong group.

Look for Category Shape

Categories often share a shape: four synonyms, four words that complete phrases, four items in a set, or four words with the same hidden feature. Naming the shape helps you avoid guessing from vibes alone.

Beware of the Almost-Fit

Puzzle editors love words that nearly belong somewhere else. If one word in a group feels weaker than the other three, hold the group loosely and search for a cleaner explanation.

Use Elimination Carefully

Once you solve a confident set, the remaining grid gets easier. Still, do not force the last four words together too early. The final category may depend on a hidden spelling pattern or a phrase connection rather than meaning.

When to Open a Hint

Open a clue when you have several possible groups but no way to choose between them. The best hints preserve the satisfaction of solving while nudging your attention toward the right type of link.
