How to Play Connections-Style Word Puzzles

Group sixteen words into four hidden categories. The trick is spotting the link before tempting overlaps lead you away from the clean set.

The Basic Goal

A Connections-style puzzle gives you sixteen words or short phrases. Your job is to sort them into four groups of four. Each group shares a category, pattern, phrase connection, sound, usage, or cultural reference.

How Difficulty Colors Work

Yellow is usually the most direct set. Green adds a little more ambiguity. Blue often asks for a specific association. Purple is commonly the trickiest, with wordplay, hidden patterns, or meanings that are easy to miss on a first pass.

Using Hints Without Spoilers

Start with the easiest clue and only open stronger clues when you are stuck. A good hint should point toward the kind of connection to look for without naming the category or listing any solution words.

A Simple Solving Routine

First, scan for obvious pairs or trios. Next, test whether a fourth word truly belongs with them. If a word seems to fit more than one idea, set it aside and solve another group. The cleanest category usually leaves fewer loose ends.
